In its early years, the club was part of the Iscor industrial heritage and initially featured modest facilities centred on a repurposed farmhouse. Under the long stewardship of Otway Hayes (the club’s first professional), the course flourished, and in 1955 it proudly hosted the only South African Open ever played in Pretoria, a tournament won by none other than the legendary Bobby Locke. Following that, course enhancements by Bob Grimsdell introduced strategic design features; thereafter, Zwartkop welcomed some of golf’s greatest names, including Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Lee Trevino and others, for exhibition matches and professional competitions, further cementing its place in golfing history.
