Pretoria is geleë in die oorgangs gebied tussen die Hoëveld en Die Bosveld, ongeveer 50 km noord van Johannesburg. Dit lê in 'n warm, goed beskutte, vrugbare vallei, omring deur die heuwels van die Magaliesberg-reeks.
Pretoria is een van Suid-Afrika se voorste akademiese stede, en dit is die tuiste van beide die Universiteit van Pretoria en UNISA, die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika. Die uitsig oor die hele stad vanaf 'n heuwel is die pragtige Uniegeboue, gebou in 'n goue klip met Italiaanse betegelde dakke. Paaie van pers blom-jacaranda-bome is wyd genoeg om 'n span osse te draai. Dit is hoekom Pretoria bekend staan as die Jacaranda-stad. Pretoria is 'n belangrike industriële sentrum, met swaar nywerhede soos yster- en staalgietwerk, sowel as motor-, spoorweg- en masjinerie-vervaardiging.
