Running along the dramatic meeting point of mountain and sea, the Powervan experience - formerly known as the Diaz Express, offers one of the Garden Route’s most quietly enchanting rail journeys. Departing from Hartenbos and travelling towards George and its surrounding landscapes, this unusual rail adventure trades speed for scenery, inviting passengers to slow down and savour the region’s natural beauty from a rare vantage point.
A story of reinvention
The Powervan forms part of the broader Outeniqua Powervan initiative, a heritage-inspired tourism project launched in the early 2000s by local educator Nicol Marais. What began as a retirement project quickly evolved into a distinctive rail attraction, using repurposed Transnet inspection trolleys to reintroduce passenger experiences on underutilised lines across the Southern Cape.
The coastal service between Hartenbos and Mossel Bay was initially developed as the Diaz Express around 2014, following successful trial runs during earlier holiday seasons. It was conceived not only as a tourist attraction but also as a practical shuttle to ease road congestion between popular seaside towns.
Over time, the operation evolved. By the early 2020s, the Diaz Express had been fully incorporated into the Outeniqua Powervan brand, becoming Powervan Mossel Bay, while complementary experiences in the region, including routes extending towards George, were unified under the same banner.
The journey: coast to mountain
From its Hartenbos departure point, the Powervan meanders along the coastal rail line towards Great Brak River, Glentana and beyond, with connections into the broader George rail network. The journey is defined by contrasts: sweeping Indian Ocean views give way to river estuaries, forested slopes and the rugged Outeniqua Mountains inland.
Unlike conventional trains, the Powervan uses compact rail buses, open-sided or lightly enclosed vehicles that offer uninterrupted views and an intimate connection with the landscape. These vehicles follow historic rail alignments, crossing bridges, passing through tunnels and tracing curves high above the coastline.
Stops along the way often include small stations or scenic viewpoints, where passengers can enjoy picnics, visit local cafés and galleries, or simply take in the surroundings. It’s a journey designed as much for the pauses as for the travel itself.
A different kind of rail experience
What sets the Powervan apart is its informality and accessibility. There is no polished luxury here, rather a sense of authenticity and charm. The adapted inspection trolleys, some dating back to the mid-20th century, have been carefully restored and coupled together to carry small groups of passengers, creating a social, almost nostalgic atmosphere on board.
Whether heading inland towards the forests and passes near George, or tracing the coastline from Hartenbos, the experience offers a rare opportunity to engage with South Africa’s rail heritage in a relaxed, family-friendly way.
