Set against the sweeping coastline of the Garden Route, the heritage service operated by Atlantic Rail between Hartenbos and Mossel Bay is a nostalgic journey into South Africa’s golden age of rail. More than just a scenic excursion, it is a carefully revived slice of living history, where the rhythmic chuff of steam and the scent of coal smoke evoke a bygone era along one of the country’s most picturesque coastal lines.
A revival rooted in passion
Atlantic Rail is a family-driven venture with deep roots in the region. The story begins in 1989, when rail enthusiast Errol Ekström recognised the potential for steam-hauled tourist trains in the Mossel Bay area. Working with the former Spoornet, he helped restore a disused Garratt locomotive, laying the groundwork for what would become a long-standing passion project.
Decades later, his sons, Sean, Kevin and Graeme revived that vision. Motivated by both heritage preservation and the decline of South Africa’s rail infrastructure, they set out to reintroduce authentic steam experiences to a new generation. After years of negotiation and restoration work, Atlantic Rail now offers regular heritage trips, reconnecting locals and visitors with a form of travel many have never experienced.
The return of trains to this line is itself historic: in 2026, a locomotive ran between Hartenbos and Mossel Bay for the first time in over a decade, marking a significant milestone in the revival of the route.
The route: coastal theatre on rails
The journey itself is short but richly rewarding. Departing from Hartenbos, the train traces the shoreline towards Mossel Bay’s Santos Beach, offering uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean. Vintage coaches, some over a century old, add to the immersive experience, while the gentle pace allows passengers to savour the scenery, from rocky outcrops to sweeping bays.
It’s less about speed and more about atmosphere: the whistle echoing over the sea, the steady rhythm of steel on rail, and the rare pleasure of travelling as people once did.
The locomotives: stars of the show
Central to the experience are the meticulously restored steam locomotives. Among the most notable is “Sylvia”, a South African Railways Class 19B engine built in 1930. Once destined for the scrapyard, it was saved and painstakingly restored, becoming the flagship locomotive for the Hartenbos–Mossel Bay line.
Another historic engine associated with Atlantic Rail is the Class 24 locomotive No. 3655, “Jenny”, originally built in 1943 and used on branch lines across southern Africa. These coal-fired machines, complete with towering boilers and billowing smoke, offer an authentic, sensory-rich reminder of steam’s enduring romance.
For travellers seeking something beyond the ordinary, this heritage line delivers a rare combination of history, scenery and nostalgia - an experience that feels both timeless and uniquely South African.
