Bloemendal Trail Park - Durbanville, Cape Town

For an active taste of the Durbanville Winelands, Bloemendal Trail Park is hard to beat. Set on Bloemendal Wine Estate between the slopes of Tygerberg Hill and the Kanonberg, the trail park combines rugged mountain-bike routes, running trails and family-friendly cycling facilities with sweeping views across the surrounding vineyards and northern suburbs. It is a destination where you can arrive for a serious workout, a relaxed weekend ride or simply a morning outdoors.

Mountain biking is the main attraction. The network caters for a wide range of abilities, from complete beginners to experienced riders looking for a more demanding challenge. Younger cyclists can start on the Push Bike trail, while more accomplished riders can tackle the cross-country XCO route or the better-known Lombard's Terra section. The trails wind through the estate and connect with neighbouring vineyard routes, providing plenty of variety for riders who want to extend their outing.

Running is another popular activity. Marked 2.5 km and 5 km routes provide options for a shorter jog or a more substantial run, while estate roads and pathways allow runners to add distance. The setting makes exercising here rather more appealing than pounding the pavement, with vineyards, hills and open Cape countryside providing the scenery.

Bloemendal Trail Park has also developed into a venue for organised events. It hosts cross-country competitions, national cycling races, coaching camps and group outings, while children can take part in mountain-bike parties and skills activities. Thursday evening night rides are another popular feature, although these are weather-dependent and require appropriate lights and safety equipment.

The park is part of the historic Bloemendal Wine Estate, one of the established properties in the Durbanville Wine Valley. The estate itself has deep agricultural roots, and the old farm road through the property reflects the area's earlier rural character. Today, vineyards and recreational facilities coexist on the estate, creating an interesting blend of old Cape farming landscape and modern outdoor adventure.

Visitors do not necessarily need their own bicycle. Bike rental and servicing are available through the Trail Hub, while the Trail Park Café and Bar provides coffee, snacks, hot food and drinks after a ride or run. It is also a convenient place to relax and watch other cyclists coming off the trails. The wider Bloemendal Estate offers additional attractions, including wine tasting and family dining, making it possible to combine an active morning with a more leisurely afternoon.
