Rust-en-Vrede Gallery and Clay Museum is one of Durbanville’s most rewarding cultural attractions, combining an intriguing heritage building with contemporary South African art and one of the country’s most unusual specialist museums. Set on Wellington Road, the complex offers a chance to step away from the modern suburban landscape and into a place where Durbanville’s civic history, artistic traditions and creative present come together.
The origins of the building reach back to the 19th century, with the complex constructed during the 1840s and incorporating a mixture of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architectural influences. It has enjoyed a remarkably varied life. The building served at different times as a magistrate’s court, police headquarters and prison, while its rooms were also associated with the early administration of Durbanville. The first Village Management Committee meetings were held here, and the site later played a role in the town’s municipal development.
A particularly colourful chapter began in 1927, when the property was acquired by Robert John Meneely, an eccentric clockmaker. He converted the building into four semi-detached residences, giving them the names The Oaks, Ingle Nook, My Vreugd and The Retreat. Meneely was apparently an enthusiastic collector of clocks, adding another layer to the building’s already unusual history. The Durbanville Municipality acquired the property in 1978 and began the process of restoring it and finding a new purpose for the historic site.
That purpose emerged in the early 1980s, when the Durbanville Cultural Society worked with the municipality to transform Rust-en-Vrede into an arts and cultural centre. The complex was officially established as an arts centre in 1981 and was declared a National Monument in 1984, helping to protect its architectural and historical character.
The Clay Museum is the star attraction for many visitors. Established in 1986, it was the first museum of its kind in South Africa and was created specifically to celebrate and preserve the country's ceramic heritage. Its origins are particularly appropriate to Durbanville, which historically had important clay quarries and brickfields. The collection includes mainly contemporary South African ceramics and demonstrates the remarkable variety of techniques used by local artists, from hand-building and wheel throwing to decoration and firing.
Adjacent to the permanent collection is The Cube, an experimental exhibition space consisting of 90 small cube-shaped display areas. It provides a constantly changing showcase for contemporary ceramicists, sculptors and other artists, making a visit worthwhile even for returning visitors.
The gallery itself occupies three exhibition spaces and presents a changing programme of exhibitions featuring both established and emerging artists. It is also home to the prestigious National Portrait Award and South African Clay Awards, while art classes, workshops, studios and community activities add to the centre’s lively atmosphere. Visitors can browse exhibitions, discover ceramics and other artworks, or simply enjoy the character of the historic surroundings.
