Tucked quietly into the leafy suburb of Forest Town, the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre is far more than a museum, it is a space of conscience and reflection. Opened in its purpose-built home in 2019, the Centre exists to ensure that the memory of past atrocities is preserved with dignity, while encouraging visitors to grapple with the enduring consequences of prejudice, discrimination and silence. It is a place where history is not distant, but deeply human and profoundly relevant.
At its core, the Centre is devoted to remembrance. Its exhibitions honour the victims of the Holocaust and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, presenting deeply personal narratives that cut through the scale of these tragedies. Photographs, testimonies and artefacts invite visitors to engage not only with the facts of history, but with the lived experiences of individuals and families. The purpose here is clear: to ensure that these stories are neither forgotten nor reduced to abstraction.
Education forms a vital pillar of the Centre’s mission. It serves as an important learning hub, welcoming school groups, educators and the wider public to explore themes such as racism, antisemitism, xenophobia and human rights.
