Just east of Knysna, reached by a winding road through indigenous forest, Noetzie Beach is one of the Garden Route’s most enchanting and secluded coastal gems. Sheltered by rocky headlands and framed by lush greenery, the beach feels blissfully removed from the bustle of nearby towns. Its soft sands, dramatic cliffs and ever-changing ocean create a sense of wild beauty that instantly invites visitors to slow down and take it all in.
Noetzie Beach is perhaps best known for the cluster of whimsical stone castles that overlook the shoreline, lending the area an almost fairytale character. Built in the mid-20th century, these distinctive structures have become iconic landmarks, blending surprisingly harmoniously with the natural landscape. The beach itself is ideal for long, contemplative walks, beachcombing after high tide, or exploring rock pools when the sea is calm, while the surrounding forest provides shade and shelter from coastal winds.
Despite its tranquil atmosphere, Noetzie Beach remains conveniently close to Knysna’s lagoon, eateries and cultural attractions, making it an easy addition to any Garden Route itinerary. Whether you visit for a quiet morning stroll, a picnic beneath milkwood trees or simply to admire the view, Noetzie Beach offers a rare combination of natural drama and peaceful isolation, a place that lingers in the memory long after the sand has been brushed from your shoes.
Parking at Noetzie Beach is very limited and a slightly quirky part of the experience, but all part of what keeps this Garden Route gem feeling remote and unspoilt. There is a public parking area at the top of the access road where visitors leave their vehicles before heading down to the beach on foot. The old wagon road that leads down to the shoreline is not suitable for general vehicle use and has very little turning or parking space, so private cars aren’t permitted to drive down it except to drop off elderly or disabled visitors.
From the parking area you’ll find a steep flight of about 116 stone and concrete steps leading down to the sand, which makes the walk back up something to factor into your visit, especially if you’re laden with picnic gear or beach kit.
Because Noetzie is so isolated and surrounded by private land, it’s worth arriving early in the day to secure a good spot in the main car park, and to enjoy the beach before it gets busy. Be mindful that the road to the parking area is a gravel track, and may be bumpy depending on recent rain, so drive slowly and carry essentials like water and sun protection for the walk down.
Please Note: There are no lifeguards or public conveniences.
