Oppenheimer Park Golf Club - Welkom, Free State

Oppenheimer Park Golf Club (often called “Oppie”) lies just outside Welkom in the Free State and presents a classic parkland course set in verdant landscape. Founded in 1949, its design is attributed to Bob (Robert) Grimsdell, and over the decades it has become well known for its mature trees and water hazards. The fairways are densely lined with old trees, and water comes into play on six out of its eighteen holes. The backdrop of mining activity contrasts with the lush greenery and nearby Witpan Dam, which hosts thousands of flamingos – giving the course a tranquil, natural character.

In recent years the club undertook a significant redesign, officially unveiled in March 2022. Several holes were re-worked: new greens installed, old ones upgraded, and alterations made to maintain the course’s condition in view of water level changes in neighbouring reservoirs that had threatened some playing areas. The redesign also brought in “ability-based” tee boxes rather than gendered tees, giving players more choice in how they want to challenge themselves. Signature features include a hole with an island green and holes that test accuracy off the tee as well as strategic play around bunkers and water. The rough is famously challenging, so staying in play off the tee matters more than simply hitting long drives.

Facilities beyond the course are strong. There is a clubhouse with well-appointed change rooms and locker facilities, a fully stocked golf shop, practice amenities including driving range, putting and chipping greens, a practice bunker, and a halfway house / café serving meals and refreshments. There is also a bar overlooking the 18th green, making it a pleasant spot to wind down after a round.
