This little oasis is a great way to take a break from the hustle and bustle
of city life. Based in Pretoria, the 128ha boasts an abundance of birdlife and a
series of nature trails and walks - so don't forget to pack your binoculars and
walking shoes!
More than 150 species of birds have been spotted here, so
bird watchers will be in their element. Even rare birds such as the Corncrake
and River Warbler have been spotted at the reserve, so make sure you keep your
eyes peeled. If it's the birdlife that interests you, the best time to visit is
between September and April, which is the summer season.
If hiking is
your thing, then you will have 3 trails to choose from: 2.3km, 3.2km and 4,2km
routes. Keep your eyes open along the way for zebras, impalas and hartebeest. A
little harder to spot are the mongoose, hedgehogs, hares, porcupines, Cape
clawless otters, bush babies and small-spotted genets.
Another great
thing about Faerie Glen Nature Reserve is you can bring along your best friend -
and I'm not talking about Susan, I'm talking about Fido! Take your dog along,
but make sure he is on a lead at all times and take a poop packet with you,
because no one wants to step in your doggie's doo-doo!
