Set amid the rolling grasslands of the Cradle of Humankind near Kromdraai and Krugersdorp, the NIROX Sculpture Park is a mesmerising fusion of art and nature that’s become a must-visit for culture vultures and outdoor lovers alike. Founded in 2006 by the NIROX Foundation to nurture contemporary art practice, the park occupies roughly 30 hectares of landscaped lawns, water features and indigenous veld alongside the Blaauwbankspruit River. The park’s origins stem from a bold vision to bring global contemporary art into dialogue with the local environment. Through its extensive artist residency programme, creatives from South Africa and around the world are invited to live and work on-site, drawing inspiration from the land and its remarkable cultural and palaeontological heritage. In return, participating artists contribute sculptures and installations to the park’s permanent and long-term collection, ensuring that each visit feels fresh, unexpected and deeply engaging.
