C.P Nel Museum - Oudtshoorn, Western Cape

Housed in one of Oudtshoorn’s most striking sandstone buildings, the C.P. Nel Museum offers a captivating window into the town’s heyday during the great Ostrich Feather Boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The C P Nel Museum was established in 1951 and moved to their current premises in 1972. It is a home to a chemist shop, a Synagogue, a collection of carriages and organs to name but a few. The museum’s architecture alone is worth the visit, with its iconic clock tower and finely crafted façade reflecting the confidence of a bygone era.

The museum’s exhibits trace the rise of Oudtshoorn as the world capital of ostrich farming, when feathers were as valuable as precious metals and fortunes were made almost overnight. Visitors can admire beautifully restored feather products, antique farming tools, and evocative displays that highlight the ingenuity and extravagance of the period. A particular delight is the fully reconstructed synagogue within the museum, a rare heritage treasure that pays tribute to the once-thriving Lithuanian Jewish community whose influence remains woven into the town’s cultural landscape.
