The course’s story began in 1966, when visionary sportsman and businessman Punch Barlow, inspired by elite American venues, enlisted architect Robert “Bob” Grimsdell to design what he envisaged as a venue of understated grandeur. Supported by avid golfer friends and figures like Harry Oppenheimer, Barlow’s passion saw the course and clubhouse open by 1968. Over the years, enhancements, most notably a refresh by Rob O’Friel in the late 1990s, have preserved the original character while ensuring modern playing standards, culminating in a course frequently reckoned among South Africa’s finest finishing stretches.
