For those not familiar with Gansbaai, Gansbaai is a picturesque coastal fishing town in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, internationally renowned for its marine wildlife and spectacular whale-watching opportunities.
Once a small fishing settlement, it has developed into a popular tourism destination, attracting nature lovers, adventure seekers and visitors fascinated by the ocean. Its most famous attraction is shark-cage diving, with the nearby waters around Dyer Island and Shark Alley historically known for great white shark sightings. The area is also an important habitat for African penguins, Cape fur seals and numerous seabirds.
Between June and December, southern right whales visit Walker Bay to calve and nurse their young, making whale watching a major attraction. Other activities include boat excursions, fishing, coastal walks, exploring Klipgat Cave near De Kelders and visiting the historic Danger Point Lighthouse. With its working harbour, rugged coastline, beautiful beaches and relaxed fishing-village atmosphere, Gansbaai offers a memorable combination of coastal charm, adventure and marine conservation.
