Matobo Hills

Covering 3000 square kilometres of Matabeleland in south-western Zimbabwe, a profusion of huge granite masses rise up to form a sea of hills.
These are the Matobo Hills of Zimbabwe, massive boulders that form natural shelters, which forty thousand years ago became home to the 'San', Zimbabwe’s earliest inhabitants. These ancient Zimbabwe bushman used the rock faces as canvases to record their history in the form of their unique and extraordinary art, leaving a legacy of outstanding rock paintings.

Mzilikazi, founder of the Ndebele nation, named the Matobo Hills "amaTobo", as the smooth granite boulders reminded him of the bald heads of his old indunas. Mzilikazi is interred in Matobo Hills in a hillside tomb. His possessions, including wagons and furniture, have been sealed for over a century in a cave nearby, and visitors can view this fascinating collection through small openings in the rocks.

When looking for Matobo Hills accommodation, you will find the essence of tranquillity at Big Cave Camp - Matobo Hills Bush Lodge (catered) accommodation which squats atop an enormous granite whaleback, commanding inspirational views across the famous Zimbabwe Matobo Hills National Park. While exploring Matobo Hills, make sure you visit the grave of Cecil John Rhodes on the summit of Malindidzimu, the 'Place of Benevolent Spirits'.
