Ebotse Links Golf Course, situated in Rynfield, Benoni on the East Rand, is a standout example of modern South African golf architecture combining natural beauty, thoughtful design, and top-tier facilities. Conceived by Peter Matkovich (of Matkovich & Hayes), it opened in 2008 and quickly earned its reputation as one of the finest inland links-style courses in the country. The layout is par 72, and from the back tees stretches to nearly 6 900 metres, offering golfers a full test. Its unique character comes from seven holes that play on, over or alongside water features, undulating terrain, firm fairways and dramatic elevation changes. A mix of links, parkland and lakeside holes ensures variety: from tight tee shots in amongst mounds to sweeping long holes where water comes into play and precision is rewarded.

What makes Ebotse Links special is its setting. Built around the old quarries, abandoned mining dams and natural topography, the course uses the land rather than smoothing it out completely. The fairways and greens are sculpted to take advantage of the existing slopes and water bodies. For example the stretch around holes 11-13 presents a downhill par-3 to a raised green above water, followed by a par-5 with water alongside much of the hole, and then a risk-and-reward par-4 hugging the water’s edge. The course changes with the seasons: in summer the grasses are lush and forgiving, while in the dry highveld winter the ground firms up, emphasising the links character with more bounce and roll. Abundant wildlife, birds in particular, and springbok grazing in parts of the estate, add to the sense of escape from the bustle of Johannesburg.

Beyond the course itself, Ebotse Links is part of a larger Golf & Country Estate. The clubhouse offers excellent hospitality, including a restaurant, bar, function rooms, terraces with views over dams and fairways, and a pro shop with club-fitting services. Practice facilities are comprehensive: there is a range that includes hitting toward water bodies, a chipping and bunker area, putting greens, and coaching options. Green fees vary depending on day and tee, and there are membership packages for frequent players. Security, aesthetic landscaping, walking trails, outdoor leisure spaces and scenic vistas make the visit memorable even off the course.
