Although Mitchells Plain was a development designed by the apartheid government, the people have risen to the challenges they were faced with and made this township a vibrant and exciting place to live, work and play. The community has close to 60 primary and secondary schools, 5 post offices, three major precincts (Town Centre, Westgate Mall and Promenade Mall) and more than ten smaller convenient centres. And it is out of this community that the Mitchells Plain Festival was first born in 2009 to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Mitchells Plain, a community which boasts an estimated population of over 700 000 people. The festival aims to promote the areas of Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha, as well as local entrepreneurs and businesses, drawing in excess of 30000 visitors over the 3 days which it runs, uniting the people through song, music and dance.

The event has grown considerably since 2009 and now includes a host of events and activities which take place throughout the duration of the festival. Some of the events include, a baby contest, Miss and Mr. Festival, Glamorous Granny Contest, Comedy Shows, Local Artists, DJs, HIV/AIDS Awareness Programs, Business Presentations, competitions, and motor shows, etc. To add to the excitement to the weekend the organisers have agreed to have carnival rides at the festival. The rides are sure to add to the thrills and fun of this event. So, get ready and be sure to be thoroughly entertained. They have made sure that they will have rides to please both the younger and the young at heart.

The event is organized by Cycle of Life, a local based sole proprietor, launched in 2000 with the main objective of hosting community based events aimed at heightening awareness around issues affecting the local and surrounding communities.

The 2011 Mitchells Plain festival will take place from 25 to 27 November 2011 at the Westridge Gardens in Mitchells Plain.

Take the N2 (Settlers Way) towards Somerset / Muizenberg. Take exit 11 to merge onto Jan Smuts Drive / M17. Turn left onto Klipfontein Road. Continue straight to stay on Klipfontein Road. Turn right onto Vanguard Drive. Travel along Vanguard Drive, Turn left at the 4 way robot of Morgenster Rd (theres a shopping complex on the left), Turn right at the forth robot into De Duin Rd, The park is on the right after the Council Depot.
