Cape Horticultural Societys Flower and Garden Show

Cape Horticultural Societys Flower and Garden Show

Saturday 3 September to Sunday 4 September 2011 saw the Alphen Centre in Constantia light up with the beautiful colours and aromas of spring as the Cape Horticultural Society hosted their annual Flower and Garden Show. A show which provides the public with an overview of what plants can be grown in ordinary Cape gardens. The 2011 show offered a diverse range of interesting displays of plants in the exhibition hall. These plants are, for the most part, grown out doors by Cape Horticultural Society members, who are private amateur gardeners living in the Cape Peninsula. Outside of the exhibition hall there were many stallholders selling various gardening accessories and giving the public a chance to purchase or get excellent advice on the latest gardening equipment. As always there was a wide selection of plants, both indigenous and exotic on sale.

Apart from stalls and exhibitions there were also talks and demonstrations on diverse gardening subjects given by local gardening experts. Horticulturist, Garden Designer and writer, Jenny Louw, gave an unusual talk entitled Eat Your Garden! Herb Specialist, Bridget Kitley told visitors about the growing and uses of the unusual herbs that she grows. Morne Faulhammer of Superplants Garden Centre fame gave an insight into his way of gardening and Kirstenbosch Horticulturist and Manager of the Gardens nursery gave a practical demonstration on the propagation, growing and care of Streptocarpus (The family which includes the Cape Primrose).

Each year the show generally opens on Saturdays 12:00 to 17:00 and on Sundays from 10:00 to 16:00. Light refreshments are on sale throughout the weekend and the venue is wheelchair friendly.
