President Pretorius Museum

President Pretorius Museum

Stole through the past at this restored piece of Urban Doer culture with its tranquil farmyard, coach-house, stable and smithy. This Cape-style homestead was built in 1868 and was the residence of Martinus Wessel Pretorius (1819 - 1901), the first president of the South African Republic and founder of the city of Pretoria. It was more than one hundred and five years later when the town council of Potchefstroom decided to purchase the property and restore it to its former glory. After its complete restoration the site was declared a national monument, and the President Pretorius Museum was opened.

If you would like to take a walk through a part of South African history you can do it here. The museum is open to visitors on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00 (Closing for lunch from 13:00 to 14:00), on Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00 and on Sundays from 14:30 to 16:30. Admission is free.
