The Pierneef Museum

The Pierneef Museum

A restored nineteenth century house just north of Church Square is home to the Pierneef Museum. The museum is a permanent display dedicated to the famous South African landscape painter Jacob Hendrik Pierneef. The display not only includes his artwork but also personal momentos of the artist. Pierneef (1886 - 1957) was born in Pretoria to a Dutch builder and didn't receive much formal training due to the financial constraints of his background. The Pierneefs returned to Holland during the Boer War and it was here that he came into contact with old masterpieces which had a lasting impression on him. When he returned to South Africa at the age of 18, after he had studied at the Rotterdamse Kusakademie, he was encouraged by established artists such as Frans Oerder, Anton van Wouw and Hugo Naude. This saw him becoming one of South Africas leading artists and he was commissioned to paint 32 panels for the Johannesburg Railway Station, as well as seven murals for South Africa House on Trafalgar Square, London.
Visitors to the museum can take a break from the art work and enjoy refreshments at the in-house coffee shop.
The museum is open to visitors from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00.
Booked tours can be arranged from Tuesday to Friday, between 9:00 and 13:00. And Guided tours can be arranged for Sundays and public holidays, between 11:00 and 14:30
