Olifants River Estuary

Olifants River Estuary

One of only four estuaries situated on the west coast of Southern Africa, the Olifants River estuary and surrounding wetlands have been negatively impacted by mining activities. Even with this taken into consideration there is a large variety of land, sea and water birds are seen here as well as a huge diversity of plant life. The wetlands of the estuary are an important habitat for migratory birds and an Important Bird Area (IBA). One visitor recently recorded over 78 species of birds in the area - including the much sought Little Blue Heron. The people of Papendorp derive their livelihood from fishing in the estuary and from salt gathering on the nearby salt pans. Papendorp offers visitors a quiet, peaceful setting overlooking the Olifants River Estuary and wetlands. There is also a hiking trial which follows the Olifants River from Papendorp inland to the peaceful farming and fishing community of Ebenhaeser, originally founded as a mission station in 1608.
