Groenkloof is the ideal place to "get away from it all". The reserve is in
Fountains Valley, which is just 5km from the Pretoria city centre, there is no
need to travel great distances to experience nature.
Giraffe, zebra and
blue wildebeest roam free in this 600 ha nature reserve. This is a unique
opportunity to get up close to some of South Africa's wildlife. If you are an
avid bird watcher, you will be delighted to know that over 100 species of birds
have been recorded at Groenkloof thus far.
This venue has become
increasingly popular within the mountain biking community, as it provides a
technical 20km bike track through the reserve. The rocky terrain provides for
some challenging riding, but satisfying to the experienced biker. For the less
experienced biker, there is also a jeep track, which isn't quite as taxing.
If you would rather stay on your own two feet, there are three well marked
hiking trails available (3.5km, 4km and 10.5km). You can also get your
adrenaline pumping and give the 14km 4x4 track a try. If you feel that you need
even more options to choose from, there are guided horse trails available which
allow you to gain a different perspective on game viewing.
If you
provide your own charcoal or wood, there are beautiful picnic and braai
facilitates available under the shade of tall trees. For those that aren't so
fond of outdoor eating, there is Moyo restaurant on the reserve. Moyo is well
known for their unique African ambiance and African dining experience.
The lapa is available for hire and if you go on a night drive, you will have
full use of the lapa until 23h00.
Remember to take some insect repellent,
good walking shoes and a camera with you.
