The museum consists of two furnished farmhouses, one built in 1880 and the other in 1913 and a farmyard with agricultural implements, vintage tractors and horse-drawn wagons, and a re-creation of an Ndebele dwelling.
Part of the Kaalfontein farm was donated to the National Cultural History Museum in 1977. In 1988 the remainder of the farm was purchased and the house was fully furnished with antiques from the 1920's, that help to illustrate the way of life of these early settlers.
An outside oven is used for making fresh bread, which may be purchased. There is also a replica of a traditional Ndebele hut complete with indigenous farm animals.
